“Naughty” – A Call To Action

Matilda is all the rage, isn’t it? I’m going in a few weeks and can’t wait. So, in preparation, my daughter and I have been listening to all of the songs. I absolutely love them – but the one that has really struck me, especially in light of my journey, is “Naughty”.

The melody is catchy and I was singing along. It was about the third time we listened to it, and I really heard the words. And they hit me hard.

“Just because you find that life’s not fair it
Doesn’t mean that you just have to grin and bear it
If you always take it on the chin and wear it
Nothing will change…

…If you sit around and let them get on top,
You might as well be saying
You think that it’s okay
And that’s not right!”

“Naughty” from Matilda

Often I find myself biting my tongue and not speaking out – I know some people would find that hard to believe about me. I am often too worried about how my words or thoughts will hurt or offend someone. I worry that someone I love and care about will think less of me. I’m a compulsive “sorry” say-er, and what for? Just to placate the feelings of those around me?

But this behaviour undermines me and causes me stress in so many areas of my life. And as Matilda sings – “If you always take it on the chin and wear it, nothing will change.” And the reason I’m here, writing, journeying, is to make a change. To reignite my life.

In the slip of a bolt, there’s a tiny revolt.
The seeds of a war in the creak of a floorboard.
A storm can begin, with the flap of a wing.
The tiniest mite packs the mightiest sting!
Every day starts with the tick of a clock.
All escapes start with the click of a lock!
If you’re stuck in your story and want to get out
You don’t have to cry, you don’t have to shout!

“Naughty” from Matilda

And from a tiny spark, a fire is lit.

I am not going to sit around and be stuck in my story.

I am not going to make a scene and kick and scream.

But I am going to become happier, healthier and more alive.

Watch out world, some changes are being made because “sometimes, you have to be a little bit naughty!”

…how amazing are the Matilda’s in the video? Such a great example for our students of how effective facial expressions and strong sharp actions are! …

      1. Musicals are such a wonderful experience. They are so joyful and capable of so much. I have to wait until September to see my next musical live as far as I know
